Mahonia hartwegii

Post by MartinNicklin »

Does anyone grow this? I fell in love with the description of inflorescences 60-90cm long on Pan Global’s website years ago. They had none in stock so was happy on my visit to Mark Fillan’s place he had it to add to my trawl of plants.
It has been very slow but flowered the last two years. I have to say the flowers are very disappointing. The plant is healthy but I was expecting something with a bit more wow factor. Do they get better with age because if this is it, it needs to go!

I grow it badly here, allowing it to be completely swamped by other shrubs. But Mark's plant is a thing of wonder - in full sun with lots of space it has grown magnificently and the berries are like bunches of grapes.

I have a small plant from PGP so cannot really share experience regarding mature look. I bought it last year when it was available.
