A garden in April

It was a gorgeous sunny but also cool and breezy day in Redwood City today. This garden is going on 9 years old, and has filled out nicely. My clients are both in their 90’s now, and I realize I may not be spending time in this garden in the future, so I make an extra effort to really take in the details while tending it, and also having a good visit with Peder and Marilyn.

Does the Daucus decipiens maintain a population, or do you have to keep putting in young ones?

It has naturalized, there are dozens of seedlings in this part of the garden.

Daucus - new name change! Why do they do this. All Melanoselenum or just some?

It's a good doer here, too - I'm on about 7th generation of self-sown plants over the past 20 years or so. Perhaps surprisingly, despite being from the laurisilva forest in Madeira it seems perfectly content with my dry conditions without irrigation, albeit not reaching the same size. It can still make a reasonable 2m or so, though.

For me self-seeding plants are a massive bonus as I have badgers - anything I plant and then water is in danger of being dug up unless adequately barricaded - self-seeders just look after themselves.

Daucus - new name change! Why do they do this. All Melanoselinum or just some?

There was only one Melanoselinum at the last count [several other species had played with being placed there], but other monotypic or few membered genera went in to Daucus at the same time.

For example, Monizia edulis became Daucus edulis.
