Rambling Rose's.

I'm looking to acquire some highly scented rambling specimens.
Not sure if these are something you grow Charlie?
I'd like them to run through the trees on the two main borders.

Off the top of my head I am not sure what we actually have available rightnow but the following all do well up trees (in no particular order)

Bobby James
Pink Perfection
Treasure Trove
Pauls Himalayan Musk
Toby Tristram

Are the trees apple tree sized, or beech tree sized?

All the ramblers Charlie has suggested flower once in a blaze of glory.

Treasure trove has an earlier 'season of interest' with good red new growth.

If the trees are beech tree sized I would add Rosa filipes 'Kiftsgate' which is huge and slightly later to bloom. Rosa helenae is also huge, with a distinct scent. Rosa brunonii is huge and well scented too.


If you want some repeat flowering and strong scent then ramblers that have some climbing rose in their ancestry would give you, for example;
Paul Noel
Madame Alfred Carriere
Wollerton Old Hall
The Albrighton Rambler [not strongly scented to my nose]
Ghislaine de Feligonde [not a strong scent but in significant bloom most of the summer and into the autumn]

and we shouldn't forget Rosa moschata that starts late with a strong musk scent, and keeps going on and off for the rest of the year.

Thanks Chad ...really comprehensive lowdown on different ramblers is invaluable!.
The tree's vary from the laburnum/ large cotinus tree/ twisted hazel....plus others.

Small trees then.

Be cautious of the classic ramblers; they will swamp small trees!

'Modern climbers' or even large shrub roses may suit you better.

If you go to Peter Beale's website and search for right size and maximum scent and repeat flowering and it generates a list headed by Aimée Vibert and Alister Stella Gray, which are both repeat flowering noisette roses.

David Austin's rose page on Rugosa Rose hybrids shows some large repeat flowering shrub roses that wouldn't climb in to the trees, but could form mounds of shrub in between and some of them have strong wafting scents. I have 'Hansa' here which scents the area round the house and has a resident population of stick insects living in it.

Hi Charlie...it was lovely to finally meet you after several years of exchanged posts on various forums!..even though were into different types of gardening!.

Rambling rector & treasure trove are now safely planted in there new home.

Good to finally meet Karl, sounds like you picked the better day for looking at the gardens, Martin says it was quite crowded on Saturday. Apart from the wind it was a lovely weekend and completed a dry year of plant sales (apart from a shower on the afternoon of Tregrehan) Our last one for this year.

Hi Charlie, quick question.
Rambling rector started flowering here a couple of weeks ago in its North/east border.

The treasure trove one in a south/west border is growing even faster with thicker stems...but no sign of any fowers yet?, is generally later to bloom or just taking longer to establish?.
