There are a few plants that seem to manage in the harsh arid conditions

The 'Dry End' does look dry but as a 'one time only' tourist I was under the impression that the north side got the most rain and the rest of the island was then quite uniform. Which is the dry end?
I was quite shocked when i realised that it is ten years since we visited, must go again.

It is the Eastern end that is driest The north is wetter as you say, largely for the same reason as on the Canaries, the height of the mountains and the prevailing wind direction piling the cloud up, the East is a lot lower therefore drier, it is often windy so its best to pick a flat calm day as some of the exposed ridge lines on the path are a bit scary if its blowing. In the south anywhere that is not irrigated will look dry by the end of summer unless high up- hence the Levada system.

This reminds me of an occasion on one of my Mexico trips. Neil Armstrong and I had made it to a lovely little place called Puerto Angel right on the bottom edge of the country on the Pacific coast. Stayed one night then got up early and headed off before breakfast was on the go. We drove west further along the coast and pulled into a small eaterie that was serving breakfasts right on the beach at little spot called Zipilote. Unbeknown to us we had stumbled upon the one and only nudist beach in the whole of Mexico, soon evidenced by a giant and rather overweight lady striding along the edge of the water, her massive pendulous breasts swaying vigorously. We suspected she was German. Then a short while later a couple of European girls in the early 20s rushed down to the water, whipped off their bikini tops and started frolicking about in the wash. The bar owners started to film them and it was clear the girls knew the attention they were attracting. Nevertheless I have to say I felt slightly uncomfortable with the whole situation. So after our 12th coffee refill we decided to hit the road.
