Art in the garden?

Post by charlie »

Was at a garden in Quenington over the weekend, the owner is an artist and obviously likes seeing sculptures in her garden, but how do you feel about it?
Here are some examples

For me they detracted rather than enhanced, but what do you think? I won't even mention the price tag on some of these (mentioned as we were backing our vans in to off load!!)

Some I liked - 025, 024 & 021 especially.
Others are rather indifferent, but some are truly awful - 022 & 018 for example.
019 and 011 (look like the sort of tat that you can see at Kew) deserve special mention - TRULY AWFUL!

I guess it just depends on the piece and where it is sited.

They don't do much for me either. If I had to live with any of them I can see the fun in 011.
There is no accounting for taste

I like the Magpies but don't go much on most of the other stuff. Savill used to hold a sculpture trail each year and most of them were tasteful. I will see if I still have some pictures.

A lot of this kind of thing just leaves me cold. Most seem so incongruous in a garden setting and distract from the true art ... which is the planting.

I like a bit of art in the garden. Some I like , some I don't. ;)

I am torn, I don't hate it, but it needs to be done well, which a lot of the time it is not.

i think the objects you put in your garden, or don't put in the garden, are often bits of fun, or are very personal to you. So may not work when others look at them.

Am I correct in thinking at one point there was a "Garden Tat" thread on UKEG? It is almost easier to be proud of fun or hideous items than something you think it tasteful and goes well with your plants. I think we should bring back the garden tat thread

I think more of us can relate to the garden tat rather than sculptures. My garden is way too small for sculptures but big enough for tat. Keith and Melissas garden is just the right size for sculptures and I do like all the bits they have dotted about

Interesting to read some of your replies, for me (and I guess it is a personal thing) not only should it look good and be well made (some of the bits I showed were borderline tatty) but be part of the garden, not something that dominates or draws the eye

I like some of those, but I also dislike some of them.

You're certainly right about having to have a big garden to carry them off Mark.

Big sculptures in small gardens will just look wrong.

We have a sculpture out in the front garden. You can see it in the left of the shot below. It is supposed to represent my family, but the only one they had for sale had 2 children rather than 3 children, so we pretend that the "bump" on the woman is the youngest of my 3 children and still in Mummy's tummy
