Red Death

Post by Mark »

I don't know about you lot but I am plauged with the red lily beetle this year  I must have killed 40 or so in the last month alone. Going back to Christmas time I diced to have a go at making a couple of small table decorations using small branches from my Abies. I cut off plenty of bits and took them into the kitchen (while the wife wasn't there) only to find they were crawling with the red devils...so that's where the go for winter dormancy.

Very surprised by that Mark, I haven't seen one this year, despite keeping an eager eye out for the. By now they would have tattered my crown imperials, but lillies are a bit tardy this year just starting to appear. Last year I must have killed more than fifty. I reckon you have a severe infestation there.

Uh oh,spoke too soon. Just been out for an inspection and killed 12 of them, hidden away in pairs in the leaf axils shagging no doubt! It was 23c today so I wonder if the heat has brought them out?

I don't think they've reached Scotland. Too cold.

I crushed my first one of the season today.

Oh my god!

I have finally found one gardening advantage associated with living up here in the frozen north ;)

They've found my Frits over the last week. They can be partial to Tricyrtis later in the year so I need to be vigilant.
