Shrub ID?

Post by charlie »

Can anyone put a name to this evergreen shrub, seen on Tenerife in Puerto Cruz it had very scented white flowers and purple fruits a bit like small plums which bled a white sap when cut open.

I thought it may be Acokanthera oblongifolia, I have one seed, which has now germinated!

When it has enough leaves to spare; break it in half [the leaf not the plant]. If it oozes latex then you are probably right.

I tried an ID on this before and coudn't even decide if it was Oleaceae or Rubiaceae. Now you give a plant with a good pictorial match that is in the Apocynaceae!

Definitely bleeds latex like sap (nicked one of the seed leaves!)

I suspect if it survives long enough it will have to live in the conservatory
