Schefflera ID's ?

Post by charlie »

Bit of an ask from babies but anyone any idea which I may have? Both came from John Lanyon. first was last year I was admiring the full size plant and he broke a few bits off (I had no idea they are so easy from cuttings!)

This I think is the tree they came off

This second was a seedling he gave me at the end of a 2014 visit, the leaves are quite matte and somewhat furry, its still inside in a pot and I would quite like to get it out next year but if its stupidly tender I may palm it off on someone with a better chance of growing it!

Failing ID's any general likes and dislikes? one thing I did see from visits to John was how big they get! Here I am hoping it will a case of "Chance would be a fine thing"

In any other garden the range of possibilities would be limited and the ID's straightforward.

I think the first one is Edward's form of Schefflera taiwaniana.

In any other garden the second one would be S.rhododendrifolia.

But the leaflets are broad and 'poise' isn't familiar.

When you have some flowers on it I can key it out!

Chad.

Well there's a challenge! I will do my best. What sort of size and age do they start flowering?

I may be being a bit dim here but wouldn't it be easier to ask John? Or don't you want to admit you weren't taking any notice of what he was saying to you at the time.

Its not the easy Jas :)
A; John doesn't respond to emails (well not mine anyway!) and he is not on any forums

B; the garden he has inherited and has been adding to contains masses of plants that are out of my comfort zone (Code for I can't grow them) and the names come so thick and fast you haven't a hope of remembering them. there must be at least a couple of dozen very large Schefflera in the woodland all different

However if he phones with another invite to visit or pays one of his rare visits here I will be sure to ask him!

Besides which I know how much Chad likes a challenge
