My Lilium reglae got clobbered by frost - I thought they were rock hardy?charlie wrote:Shame about the rain! but stuff still trying to look good in the garden
lilium regale 003
They've looked very sorry for themselves since, most just a few leaves at ground level, some made decent flower stalks but they were weak, and had very little leaf, and the rest look like they are trying, unsuccessfully, to recover from a virus attack :(
The day after the frost 29-April

and now:

Suggestions on a postcard please ...

The bulbs are hardy but not the growth.kGarden wrote:My Lilium reglae got clobbered by frost - I thought they were rock hardy?charlie wrote:Shame about the rain! but stuff still trying to look good in the garden

All my Lilies are later than most because I plant them where the soil soesn't get sun until later in the season. Keeping them cooler longer reduces the risk of frosts taking the soft young foliage. They still multiply freely.
Regarding the potential virus if you have some that look free of it pot up the affected ones and see what happens next year. If not, give them another year.

Thanks. I have got a Hybrid which comes into leaf very early and the "packet" said to protect from early frost ... I didn't extrapolate that into all Lilies.
I'll fleece them (what a pain ...) if we are forecast a frost after they start into leaf in future years.

I pension off the ones in pots to all over the garden (mostly regale) but I always plant very deep 12-18" down and have never had lilies trying to come up while we are still getting frosts (first week of may is last frost for me here) so it may be worth planting deeper? no idea if thats the reason I have never seen the problem.

Good idea, mine would be in solid clay down that low, dunno if that matters though. I'd have to find a way to assist the drainagecharlie wrote:I always plant very deep 12-18" down
I wonder if it would spread the flowering period to plant a group at greatly different depths?

Re is a cracking thing Bomarea edulis

bomarea edulis 019 by charliepridham, on Flickr
I try and limit my postings about Clematis but I thought this species Clematis campaniflora rather good, botanists get hours of fun arguing about whether its a sub species of viticella or a separate species (part of the National collection either way)

dregea sinensis 020 by charliepridham, on Flickr
Another climber that never fails to impress

I resisted a picture of Nabob as Chad's said it all, fabulous thing, up against a wall or fence seems perfectly happy here too, indeed all the Abutilon are good value

So that blue thing earlier was a Bomarea edulis was it? :)charlie wrote: I try and limit my postings about Clematis but I thought this species Clematis campaniflora rather good, botanists get hours of fun arguing about whether its a sub species of viticella or a separate species (part of the National collection either way)

Only saying this 'coz I'z iz jealouz ...
I had singled out half a dozen Clematis from your Catalogue, but I've back tracked because realistically I'm not at the stage where I could look after climbers in the beds ... I need to finish construction of the hard landscaping before I get distracted with frames etc. or even just finding the time in the spring to extract last year's growth from the shrub it so beautifully decorated the previous year. But you lot will no doubt tell me I'm just being a Pansy ... (I wrote Pussy but didn't think that was the right word for a gardening forum ...)
Perhaps I should place an order for the Clematis for NEXT year, give you time to put them by for me, and force myself to be ready by then?
I've also been too lazy to go out and check what roses I got this spring - destined to grow up the very old & tired trees in the orchard - but I might send you a "hopeful of stock" email this evening.
Off to Chenies Manor on Sunday to meet Charlie and pick up a few plants. Hope the car is big enough!
