Both good looking plants. I've not come across the Nicotiana before, do you grow it as an annual?

I overwinter the Nicotiana in my shed. Just dried it out and left it in there till March. Next spring it will be planted out. Experimental, but so easy from seed that it's kind of a keeper.

I have a spare seedling....................

You've done well to get your Canna altensteinii to flowering so early, I restarted mine a bit late this year and they are way being yours.
Are you certain that you have Dahlia imperialis?. I believe the species D.imperialis flowers are single and more cup shaped than those in your picture. In fifteen years I've never managed to get D.imperialis to flower before the frosts kill the buds :(
A few years ago I bought a Dahlia excelsa from Hill house nursery in Devon which produces flowers just like yours on a plant that gets to about 8ft tall. I'm not sure that the name is correct on that one either as to me it looks like a cross between a species tree Dahlia and a cultivated form. All very confusing really.

The following photo of the whole plant was taken about three weeks ago. It's a good two metres across................
