Seed harvest, a bit of a quiz!

Post by charlie »

I was originally intending to make this a post about the late or non ripening of seeds this year but when I looked at the pictures thought it might be fun for you to ID them all, I have tried to remove from view too much helpful foliage, bear in mind some is not yet ripe!

I am surprised that with the generally good summer and long autumn that a lot of stuff has failed to make up ground after the cold spring, we are only just starting to pick grapes and they are in a polytunnel!

A novel approach to number them in reverse order!

006 is a Bomaraea; do you expect to get to species from the one picture?

and 7a is Philesia magellanica I think. Do you have to pollinate it to get it to set seed or does it manage without?

Blame Flickr for the numbering order! I can award 50% for Bomarea, you are in a somewhat advantageous position to get the species as you have actually seen the plant in the garden while it was flowering :)

Spot on. I now have two Philesia clones and did some hand pollinating last year, I thought they were slow to germinate and grow but first get your seeds - the pods have now been on the plant for 16 months and are still not fully ripe!

Now which Bomarea? Obviously it is the true Bomarea pardina which has flowered and produced enough seed to supply the whole European demand? Oh no, that turned out to be acutifolia and I don’t think this is that.

Or more realistically it is a choice between B.edulis [hirtella hort] and multiflora [caldassii hort]; in my experience I have had more fruit on edulis; so. Is it Bomarea edulis?

10 out of 10!

My Bomarea pardina (not!) never reappeared after I evicted it to outside, no loss if it wasn't hardy, have you tried yours in the ground in the polytunnel?

Close to flowering, but probably not close enough!

We are picking off the easy ones first.

Is 004 Lonicera henryi?

...and I can't decide whether no 5 is a Holboellia or a Stauntonia so the species is going to be a wild guess (my favourite sort). Holboellia latifolia?
