A long wait for the first flower

Post by AndyC »

This Clivia miniata was given to me about five years ago, it has been a long wait for the first flower Image

I've had a Doryanthes palmeri plant from seed for about the same length of time and reckon it will be another four or five years before it is large enough to flower.
What 'first flowers' have you been waiting for?

Two contenders here, either the Macfadyena or Buddleja colvilei 15 and 12 years respectively

That's me whooped! Seven years is the best that I can offer for my seed grown BoP....................

I've been waiting for two seasons for the Ferarria crispa offsets that I was given to bloom, but hopefully this winter they will.

Fifteen years  I'd have given up long before. The only thing I've waited for longer than that is my pension :)

My Drimys winteri finally flowered this Spring, 12 years after I planted a rooted cutting that I layered from a plant that is still growing at my old place. That one doesn't flower much either.

And I bought a Hemerocallis citrina 'Baroni' at Beth Chatto's garden in 2003 that managed to get trashed, stomped, chewed and shaded out in a succession of locations - a real hard-luck-story plant. I rescued some fragments, scarcely more than root-cuttings, into a couple of pots about 4 years ago and planted them out 2 years ago in a spot where they don't get so much abuse. They finally rewarded me with a couple of flowering stems last Summer.

I have to admit I hadn't intended waiting that long! indeed the Buddleja was on its finale warning, I had even planned on its replacement :)

I am not currently winning on the length of time, but I have been growing agaves for 6 years now and have yet to have a single flower on any of my plants.
