Re: Gingers are starting
Mine are slow this year too ... but they may yet surprise me. I remember reading a keen Ginger grower saying he keeps them in the greenhouse until well into July before putting them out - he said that brought forward flowering by a couple of weeks.

Certainly works with the evergreen types, mid to late May is when my pot fulls go out. and its difficult to give enough water in summer (even in a wet year!)

All of my H. Densiflorum types have been in flower for the last 2 weeks but the flowers don't last long unfortunately in the dry weather of late. H. Devon Cream is now budding up in the greenhouse so should be out next week. The gingers were slow to start this year but have soon caught up and a bit ahead of previous years.

Hedychium gardenerianum started today, I was forced to sit in its scent cone and drink cider in the sunshine

H.gardnerianum is still in tight bud here.
'Tara' - here caught in the sun, stands over H.densiflorum 'Assam Orange' and the smaller, paler, densiflorum 'Edward Needham's Embossed Leaf'.

H.wardii had been a bit overgrown and consequently shy to flower. It has now grown through to the sun and is putting on its best show yet. This is another Edward Needham introduction.

Two have joined the party, just greenii to go now
As you can see Tara was all but decapitated by the wind a couple of weeks back
Hedychium tara 007 by charliepridham, on Flickr
Not the most perfect flower but one of the best scents from this hybrid from Tresco, and its also good at flowering in the ground which I find tricky with some of the other sorts

Not the brightest ginger, but the one I have watched most carefully this year.
Globba radicalis 160916 by John Jearrard, on Flickr
Introduced by Paul Barney at Edulis as Globba saltatoria, amended to Mantisia saltatoria , the Plant List tells me it should really be Globba radicalis, which is todays name of choice. Very few pictures available online, and they seem to show rather extravagant bracts not seen in this one.

Does it have the same enthusiastic root system as the Hedychium?
