Some Box plants

Went to dig up some spare Box plants from a friends garden ...



... hard to believe, but you wouldn't notice that anything was missing from her garden, I reckon the previous owners had used a Salt-shaker when designing how many Box plants they needed!

This is the "curve" for an intended Cloud Pruned Topiary project.



Dunno whether Box blight is likely to be an issue, but meantime I'm raising (slowly :( ) Japanese Box and some other things as longer term alternatives.

I like the look but was put off by the lady that owns Kingston Bagpuize near Oxford - she has some cloud pruned box and very nice it looks, I asked how hard it was to maintain and her reply was it was "No trouble at all, I just tell the gardeners it needs doing!"

Haven't really decided what form "Cloud" will take as yet - we have a number of ideas on the drawing board.

but I think I prefer the Pom-poms to be more differentiated. I've seen that sort of continuous-cloud with fissures between - can't find a good example photo, but something like this (but continuous-hedge rather tahn single-tree)



We also like the idea of Box Mounds - not Balls in the sense of not being speherical - and also the ability to meander between them (which might help airflow for Blight, but for us the mounds need to be big so as not to look out of proportion, so that probably won't help enough). Can't find the photo I remember, maybe it was in The Garden rather than online, but here's something approx.

I'm not a great lover of this kind of 'formality' but I must admit that I really like those! Reminds me of a brain................

I'm sure I've seen a better picture of this Yew tree - i.e. when the "fissures" are more pronounced - buts its impressive either way. He's well into his 80's !!

Laid out ready for planting - the Mypex has done a good job of compbating the weeds

Amazing how large an area they have filled in. I'm off to a flying start, compared to the cuttings I took a few years ago.

I'm in the process doing something similar (but on a much reduced scale to yours) either side of the steps (that I haven't built yet) that lead from the road towards the front door. I think it'll look fun in a couple of years when they've grown a bit.
