PUSHING THE BORDERS

Silly me :oops: . It is D. tamaulipana, a magnificent foliage plant for many months and a brief period of flowering before the frost or first big storm arrives.

Impressive the amount of larger Dahlia species you have available to you over there, typically only D. imperialis, tenuicaulis and campanulata are seen here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

At least the D. imperialis can reach impressive sizes here, I’ve had it get almost 30’ tall growing up and through a Japanese plum tree. Here’s some photos of mine, after surviving a Diablo winds event followed by first rain yesterday.

That third photo David of the flower spray against the sky is why I think this plant is so beautiful. I’ve only ever seen something like that once in the UK. Stunning. Like an explosion of fireworks.

My tree Dahlias have escaped frost so far but storm 'Bert' is only a few hours away so that will probably be the end of them for this year

Nothing special here either, just D. imperialis flowering. It got pretty big this year, over the eves of the house, maybe 15 feet or so. They die to the ground every winter, so have to start anew in spring.
