I was David Feix on GOTE, and live and garden in Berkeley, California, just across the bay from San Francisco and quite a bit less windy and foggy than San Francisco, but still very much a coastal fog-belt climate which is often overcast with morning and evening fog/high clouds in the summer months which keeps us rather spring-like in climate year-round. I grow a lot of tropical montane cloud forest species because we have the perfect climate for it, along with more xeric succulents and fynbos plant community species from South Africa. I also design, install and maintain gardens here in the San Francisco Bay Area, but have also worked as a landscape architect on international projects in Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Here’s a few photos from the past two days, one two years old garden here in Berkeley, the other an 8 years old garden in Redwood City across the bay and south of San Francisco.

Hortusgardens there, hortusgardens here, real name Bill, location Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. I'm more of a forum reader than contributor but love the challenge of growing. I have cold wet heavy clay in winter, cracked concrete in a dry summer but it is very fertile!!

Hi all, I was a lurker for a year or two on GOTE, hoping to be more active here but do enjoy reading everyone's contributions. I've been growing tropicals in my West Yorkshire back garden since 2020 and last year my interest moved into arid planting with the creation of a desert bed. Future plans include ripping up my fully turfed front lawn and creating a gravel bed influenced by Beth Chatto but also taking on some of Paul Spracklin's ideas for cacti and succulents.
