Wishing you all a great year and kicking off with a quick roundup around my garden just before it got dark on New Years day.

Nothing out of the ordinary and mostly you could say "The usual suspects" but it helps to cheer me up along with the days getting ever so slightly longer!

I have just had a walk round my front garden. Some snowdrops are out, marigolds , roses and cyclamen.

Ah, lycianthes, i used to have that when it was solanum. It's still one of my favourites but I pushed it too far. -2c just ok, -3c not so much

Just how old are you?

It was recognised as being closer to sweet peppers than to tomatoes and therefore given the new genus name in 1920!

I recall Lycianthes still being referred to as 'the new name' in the 1960's though.

Still being sold in the 'sheds' as solanum rantonnetii. I'm after another iochroma australis(acnistus australe) and some bedding geraniums(yes, pelargoniums!). I need to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century :D

Just to cheer you up...

Kew currently have it as Iochroma australe despite it having been demonstrated to be an Eriolarynx. The new name for it as an Eriolarynx ['There is no good argument against creating the new combination E. australe'], hasn't been validly published as far as I know. So we are in an odd situation that we know which genus it belongs to but it doesn't have a valid name within the genus! Increasingly the combination Eriolarynx australe is being used though.

If you look hard enough you can still find Chamaerops excelsa in some garden centres/DIY sheds. Although it is getting rarer. Perhaps it should be listed on CITES?

The snowdrops are in full swing.

This is 'Trumps' a 'good doer' with clean green marks on the outer petals.
I tried to divide it last summer, but despite digging deeply and widely I couldn't find the clump of bulbs!

It is a bit of a relief that it is back. And exactly where I had been digging!
