PUSHING THE BORDERS

Against our better judgment we agreed to do a plant sale here on the 1st July, our missgivings proved to be sadly true and it was a poor sale, but as the main reason for agreeing was to see the gardens again after 20 odd years we were not too down hearted! especially as the weather was agreeably cooler than of late.

Thanks for the pictures Charlie, a reminder of past visits. The last time we visited was summer 2011 after the previous bad winter when it was beginning it's recovery, quite a few losses I recall. Your second picture reminded me of our first encounter with Clerodendrum trichotomum and it's heavenly scent, it was growing right next to the stone archway. It is one of the plants I will definitely introduce to our new garden, suckers everywhere but easily managed. Did you climb the hill for the view down Chesil beach?

Great pictures Charlie, sorry to hear the sale wasn't so good. I nearly drove up for it but couldn't face the heat.

Charlie is was great to meet you at Daniels the evening before.

Sorry to hear the plant fair turned out to be as you feared it would and glad then that John Churched and I didn't make the trip back again the next day!

Super pictures give good memories of my visit the day before. I didn't see that giant Lonicera, I think that is the thing with great gardens like Abbotsbury. Lots of super plants and very easy to miss a good deal of the interesting ones. On Saturday I popped back in the garden whilst waiting for John and found a big clump of Rhodea japonica that I had not spotted.

Really enjoyed the garden having not been back there since my first visit 9 or so years ago.

Lovely pictures Charlie, its a great garden. what was the matter with the plant sale? Lack of people or lack of sales?

Lots of people, just lack of interest in buying any plants (in this weather I cant say I blame them!) not just us it was poor for all the nurseries. Garden made up for it, lovely place

I used to sell bonsai at plant fairs in another life, I remember going to one in the hot weather it was very poor, did the same fair in different weather it was good. ;) If its to hot people lose the will to live. :roll:
