Cestrum nocturnum

Post by islandcassie »

I have just walked through the house and the scent from the Cestrum made me pause - thank goodness it is planted on the other side of the garage as the scent is unbelievably strong. No pictures as the tropical rain is hammering down!! We had a very dry January with only 6.8 inches, Feb might be a bit more as we have had 4 inches in 5 days. Last year we had 111 inches ( 2819 mm) which was a very dry year.

I have now had to close all the windows on that side of the house at 9pm, as I can't breath with the perfume wafting through the house!! Too much!

Charlie - although our soil is clay ( no need to explain further) the underlying layers are old coral reefs - so extremely porous and well draining which is great with our rainfall. The result is that we are boggy and well drained at the same time!! We needed some work done this week during a damp patch, and the grass is just ruined beyond belief in spite of their best efforts with plastic bags etc. At least we don't flood like some of the riverside villages when we get 11 inches overnight!

Sounds like what Christo Lloyd referred to as "Keyhole Scents" - "The odour of Lilium auratum is gloriously rank, and not to be borne nearer than the porch and even then your front door would need to have a Yale-type keyhole" :) (Country Life 15.7.'71)
