Storm Austin?

Post by charlie »

Hope you are all still in one piece. Here the only casualty has been a 40 year old Eucalyptus greggsoniana which has partially lent over lifting half the root plate, son and I had a go yesterday at straightening it up and although the acro prop and timber wedging has moved it a little and hopefully in the short term stopped it going right over I am suspecting it may be game over.

The other thing we tried was trimming some branches off one side what are the chances of it re sprouting if we go further? I know some Eucalypts can be pollarded but can they all regrow?

.

The only damage here was Dahlia tamaulipana which has been defoliated.

Eucalyptus gregsoniana is a 'mallee', so it should regrow from hard pruning with no trouble.  If it fails it is more likely to be from damage below ground level upsetting its roots.

PS.
I've asked Jon who suggests cutting it back hard saying that they never stablise if you try to prop them up.

A huge oak which survived Goretti -several Cornus macrophylla and a 60 ft Styrax given to me as a seedling by Edward Needham were headliners in a nasty little storm....however none of this matters a jot when you think of Richard Baines of Logan being killed by a falling tree in Storm Boelo Really sad
