Post by charlie »

Spent the day nipping quickly between various greenhouses and tunnels today as the wind has been both strong and cold. with the extra shelter from the structures its business as usual for the Cats Claw

Polygala flowers all year under glass, outside it is a bit hit and miss, dying some years doing well in others

Sadly the large flowered Clematis are a bit of a struggle outside here, I have very few places that are sheltered enough, but here in one of the tunnels they can do their thing in peace!

Looking good Charlie.

It's been such a depressing day here in Surrey, we topped out at 6c today :cry:

Ironically I have been emptying a pond today whilst the rain tried it's best to refill it! Rescued a number of newts and other amphibians that will make their way into the clients new wildlife pond (if the weather dries up enough to dig it out).

Positively Arctic here in Oxfordshire - the day after my order from Hill House arrived :?
Worse still, the wind (which I wasn't expecting to be that bad) smashed a couple of succulents. My fault, but truly frustrating.

Thankfully, two of faves don't need to hide;
Iris japonica....................

And Clianthus puniceus.................

How do you keep the slugs and snails off the Clianthus? I have pretty much given up on them here they never look as good as yours

I have exactly the same experience with Clianthus, grows well but devoured by molluscs. Tried so many times that now I just want to appreciate others efforts!

Luck and the little blue pellets keeps them away! It is also in the shelter of next doors huge conifers, so the dry sandy soil helps too.

I've lost two in recent years, so this remaining plant is in a pot for the foreseeable future.
