PUSHING THE BORDERS

My wife and I went here today. Weather not great but as usual some good stuff. Gives an idea to our international contributors of the kinds of National Trust and stately home gardens we can visit here in the UK.

First the IDs if anyone has any ideas:

This pelargonium had massive scented leaves:



I think this might be a Codonopsis? It was getting on for 3M climbing a wall:



Long shot but can anyone ID this fabulous fuchsia? The pot displays were lovely.






Where once grew Passiflora, the walls are now adorned with this beautiful climber which I’d never heard of. Does anyone grow it? It was my favourite plant of the day!







The container displays were stunning, as befits a stately home:













The Lapageria always looks good and was attracting attention. I’d never seen so many flowers on it:

The terraces and warm walls provide a suitable microclimate for all kinds of unusual stuff. Well worth a visit in any season.

The climber is Cobaea scandens, and if the flowers stay that colour as they open then it is the white form. If they go purple then it is isn't the white form! An easy annual [herbaceous perennial in Cornwall].

The Fuchsia is Kolding Perle.

It looks like Pelargonium papilionaceum, but to call its leaves 'scented' would be very polite.

They have quite a strong stench though. Not a floral scent at all.

What was the scent like Martin?

The red flowered climber was once Senecio confusus. I tried it years ago, didn't do, but looks like I need to try it again! What a show!!

The Pseudogynoxys used to be offered by Charlie, but although Google took me to its page, it doesn't seem to be in his list this year.

I lost mine in The Beast From the East.

It was not as rampant when potted.

Can't help with most but I did once grow the Psuedogynoxis it was tricky getting it through the winter and I am afraid I gave up. It used to be senicio confuses I think.. I think it would be best grown as an annual in the uk

Might work over this side of the archipelago in a hot spot - I have a one in mind. The Powys plant has overwintered against that wall, do we think, or is that annual growth?

It is fast growing; that looks like annual growth to me.

Either heavily mulched or planted out annually?

It was herbaceous in the tunnel.

Lots to reply to. In my defence Chad, my wife took the photo of the Cobaea as we were viewing it from a distance, she used maximum zoom to get the photo and my eyesight is dreadful, not to mention my colourblindness. The flower looked pure yellow to me! I say in my defence because I have grown both the white and purple forms of scandens before so do know this plant but my poor vision let me down.

As regards the Pelargonium, I thought it had a typically pleasant scented leaf geranium aroma but my wife thought it stank … but then again I love the scent of tomato plants, marigolds and chrysanthemums. Thanks for the ID. I liked the plant.

Again in my defence, I said to my wife I was certain that the climber was a Senecio and felt quite deflated when she showed me the label. I’ve been vindicated. Paul, the plants were astonishingly lovely which the photos do not show. They looked to have developed quite woody stems so I assume they have been there more than a season. It’s very protected against that wall. I saw the seeds in Derry Watkins’ catalogue last year having seen one somewhere and admiring it but was put off by the seemingly tender nature of the plant. I might now try because like you Paul, I was really taken with it.

Paul, I seem to remember a post from you regarding Heptacodium miconioides??? Not a great photo due to the weather and the position I was in but there was a mature plant at Powys, this one not particularly floriferous (I must get a photo of my old neighbour’s plant which gets smothered in bloom) but gives an idea of the size and form:

Thanks for that pic! yes, I ended up planting one in light shade in a dry spot and it is coping with the current drought admirably!
