PUSHING THE BORDERS

I saved doing these container plantings for last, using some of the client’s existing plants and containers along with newly purchased ones, aiming for a seamless fusion suited to the monochromatic grays of the Mid-century Modern house with this interesting suspended plant shelf right at the front entry. It’s not often I get such a prominent architectural feature to indulge my love for adding container plantings as the icing on the cake.

It really helped my design process having a whole month of being on the job site to evolve my ideas on what pots and plants to add. The considerations included tolerance for infrequent watering no more than once a week, ability to handle bright indirect light. Pluses of this shelf included rain protection by the roof overhang, and such a prominent location right at eye level as one arrives/leaves the home every day.

The variegated Clivia and the 42” diameter round custom fabricated bottomless Corten steel raised planter were my client Karen’s idea and contribution, whom I really enjoyed collaborating with on fleshing out the design for this newly enclosed front garden that is downslope from the street and formerly completely on view from the street.
