My clump of Gladiolus tristis gets bigger every year, scent like wild honey suckle (according to my nose)

Not to my knowledge Charlie. The larger bulbs produces dozens of babies which will throw up vey thin grass-like growth the following spring which makes the clump look like its growing in a lawn.
I think that this autumn i will lift the bulbs and clean off the babies before replanting.
Have you ever grown Gladiolus cardinalis?

John has grown and flowered Gladiolus cardinalis
from seed, so it isn't impossible.

That's very kind. Not sure how I'd get it but am sure I will be passing at some point :)

Always a possibility! There's a chap round the conrer from here who might have a sucker going, if not I'll get back to you :)
