Re: Seed harvest, a bit of a quiz!
003 is annoying me. At first glance I thought Wisteria or other giant pea. But the fruit is not hairy like wisteria and shows no torulation to suggest that big seeds are contained. There were clearly a bunch of flowers from which the one pod has devolved. The leaf in the background looks pinnate with smooth edges to the leaf.
Are we in the territory of the Bignoniaceae?
If so the smooth edge to the leaflets suggests Bignonia rather than Tecoma or Campis for example.
So following on in the tradition of the wild guess; is 003 Bignonia capreolata?
Chad.

You can have 1 out of ten for the family, it is indeed Bignoniaceae but you are on the wrong continent with Bignonia (whose leaves have tendrils coming from them)Chad wrote:003 is annoying me. Surprised me this year by being strongly scented where I hadn't registered it before. Unlike x burkwoodii it is slightly later and doesn't get the flowers frosted off in quite the same way (but as you are in the tropics you probably dont have that happen !)Chad wrote:Is it as strongly and sweetly scented as x burkwoodii?

To me the leaves both have a distinct look and feel to them, they are noticeably leathery, but I have 5 distinct and different plants of the same species, it is very variable and the forms differ in flower colour and timing, leaf shape as well as cold hardiness, all very confusing - Oh for home DNA test kits!Chad wrote:And that brings us back to 005. From your web site list I can now say if it isn’t latifolia then it must be coriacea.
Does Tom’s introduction key out as that with the Julian Shaw key?

Well, I'm going to take a wild stab at Pandorea jasminoides for no 3, or possibly Pisum sativum

001 is a Trachelospermum, but I have no idea how to get down to species level with them.

That doesn't help much; the Apocynaceae is huge.charlie wrote: No not Trachelospermum, you are in the right family though
Do we get any credit for saying 'Clematis' for 002?
Chad.
ps do you grow any of the Alstonia?
pps. Or Mandevilla - there are only 188 of them to work thorugh if it is and you want us to identify the species!
