Just one other point against keeping it potted, soil in pots will freeze a lot quicker than in the ground and Butias will tolerate frozen roots a lot less than wet ones.

Our butia is potted, in a huge pot, if you ease off watering for a couple of months before you want to move it, say Oct-Nov, it isn't actually much effort to shift it.
He drags ours up close to the house and it gets partially sheltered by the garden umbrella.
Hasn't got a mark on the leaves, its in brilliant condition.
