And lastly any idea which Viburnum this is? my book suggests they have V tinus but this didn't look like those plants I am familiar with DSC_0206 by charliepridham, on Flickr
Now the Viburnum is a bit of a poser. The Canarian tinus is Viburnum tinus subspecies rigidum [sometimes raised to species level]. Does that match? Note the softer rough surfaced leaves and more open flower corymbs.
Was there any seed on the Gesnouinia? It is on my list of things to try.
Gesnouinia arborea, I didn't look for seed but as it was in full flower I would thing unlikely, if we go back I will bear you in mind! I was very restrained this time only 2 bags of seed!!
The Viburnum is probably tinus if there are different forms, and your description fits well with what it looked and felt like, its what they claim to have and I have been looking at local plants and there does seem a lot more variety within the species than I thought (I have never grown it here)
