A tree fern walk on the wildside

Post by charlie »

Its looking like the park rangers on Madeira have all but given up trying to eradicate Cyathia cooperi, and this walk starting at Portella is a good way to see them. Portella is high so good views when ever the trees part

Going as we do in October its not often we get to see the Hydrangea in flower, must be quite a site a month earlier

Even the first part of the walk along a dirt road is decorated with Woodwardia radicans and the odd stunted Cyathia

Although not a Levada walk as such there are some that pass through the hillside.

Once you get into the woods its only about 10 mins before you start seeing Cyathia

The paths are of course lined with stuff that is supposed to be there like these native ferns

It is the Cyathia that are the stars though

The Laurasilva forest contains many other plants (most I don't recognize!) this is Clethera arborea

Not sure what the next fern is, I had one at home (from an earlier visit) but it failed to get through the winter under unheated glass

Also some lovely fungi, well I don't expect I would be thrilled if they were on any of my trees - but in the woods they look good!
